About us
The Khoisan people in South Africa, comprising the San (hunter-gatherers) and Khoikhoi (pastoralists), are among Southern Africa's oldest indigenous populations. Their cultural background is rooted in deep environmental knowledge, click-based languages, and a nomadic, egalitarian society, which they are now asserting through cultural restoration and active, modern representation.
Key Cultural Aspects:
Heritage and Identity: They are acknowledged as the "First Nations" of South Africa, striving to preserve their distinct language, traditional attire (leather, beads), and history despite centuries of marginalization.
Lifestyle & Tradition: Traditionally, they used the night sky for navigation and agricultural timing. The San are known as nomadic hunters, while the Khoikhoi historically engaged in farming and herding.
Social Structure: The San traditionally lived in small, egalitarian groups, sharing resources, while the Khoikhoi valued livestock as a symbol of wealth.
Contemporary Recognition: The Khoisan are active in contemporary efforts to reclaim their culture, asserting their presence through traditional leadership councils and heritage projects
